October 28 saw the launch of zrodfx with a performance by underground hip-hop sensation Lyrics Born, a model showcase, and a photography series of zrodfx’s first collection by Tuan Lee.

The festive night at Lucas Schoolhouse began with an acoustic performance by local musicians Strawfoot as guests and entered captivated by the frozen poses of live models.

The excitement intensified as St. Louis Magazine’s “Top Emerging Band” The Earthworms began playing upstairs in the concert hall. The dynamic MC’s were flowing perfectly with the skilled scratching of DJ Mahf.

California native Lyrics Born took the stage after The Earthworms’ torrid 40 min set. Accustomed to performing in front of thousands of people, Lyrics Born was amped to play in a more intimate setting. The man Amazon.com editor Oliver Wang described as “one of the most creative hip hop artists today” launched a blistering set with “Bad Dreams” and concluded an hour later with “Love Me So Bad”.

The overwhlemingly positive response from those fortunate enough to attend, was a testament to the skill and professionalism of everyone involved.

As a result of the successful launch party, zrodfx was able to quickly accept placement at Woody’s, one of St. Louis’ top men’s boutiques.

zrodfx has recently been picked up in Chicago by the critically acclaimed boutique Funkshion. There innovative style of blending fashion and music makes it more than a place to shop. In addition, they carry clothes in only one of each size and are the exclusive suppliers for the Chicago market for that brand. This is a perfect match for the philosophy zrodfx employs of creating lines with limited production runs. We are proud to be carried by Funkshion so check them out!

Marvin Magazine Showcases Exhibition at Urban Culture Fashion Fest 7 May 2008 flashblocks/data/images/news_images/marvin_small.jpg

As a reflection of the growing fashion, art, and music culture from Mexico City is the publication called Marvin—“Revista de Culto”--which is known as one of the cooler mags on the market. Covering top musicians, lifestyle, fashion, and art, Marvin’s booth at the 1st Urban Fashion Fest in Mexico City was not only the place to hang-out and get drinks, but also the hipster location for people checking out various artists’ work.

On hanging wooden cube displays, Marvin hosted an exhibition that illustrated top artists in graffiti and street from a variety of cultures, including Mexico. Hundreds of viewers were able to walk through the hanging wooden art display and get up-close to each piece to check-out various brush strokes of work on display. What’s interesting about the artwork, and fashion in general from the street and urban scenes, is that there is a connection with folklore. In this case, many art pieces displayed people, characters, or messages that told a story—just as much street art does in general.

Marvin’s exhibition, like the magazine itself, indicates a strong street fashion and music culture, capturing what’s happening in the burgeoning culture of Mexico. Check it out.

Coachella Music + Arts Festival 1 May 2008 flashblocks/data/images/news_images/coachella_thumb.jpg

As the first festival of the summer circuit, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival produced by Goldenvoice, which took place last weekend April 25-27, is where you’ll see a good chunk of the bands that will be doing the festival circuit this summer. It’s also the place where new up-and-coming bands, particularly in the indie rock genre, electronica, rave, and synth are showcasing for the first time in front of larger audiences, particularly internationally as a lot of these bands will hit up the European festival circuit later in the summer.

To get a sense of what went down, it’s important to realize that it’s full-on summer in Indio at this time of year with 100+ degrees, making the outdoor stages—which usually host more well-known bands, brutally hot, and the big white tents such as Sahara (intended for electronica sets and ravers) and Gobi (up-and-coming in this category) absolutely packed as people try to escape the heat.

So basically, the tented areas and therefore bands had massive audiences this year making it hard to actually dance in the dance tents compared with years before. Also, it seemed that some of the “older” bands went on at the same time as the new young bands so that there was this divided family of older people at the main stages and younger hipsters and dancers in the tents.
